Hannah Rae Mortenson (they/them) is an artist, poet, and community-based educator living on the shores of Gitche Gumee in the Dakota and Ojibwe territory of Onigamiinsing (Duluth, MN). Their interdisciplinary work is rooted in printmaking, paper making, and fiber art, and is deeply connected to traditional craft and folk art. Their work most often explores their relationship to the natural environment and their continual learning of decolonialism and reciprocity. Hannah’s most recent work Lessons from the Creek, began as daily walks to Chester Creek in which they would observe natural phenomena and change, finding understanding of their own growth as a person, organizer, and community member through the creek. In this artist book series, Hannah seeks to document these patterns and cycles of growth, and examine what must be learned from our human and non human teachers in order to build a strong, resilient, and anti-imperialist future. Hannah holds a BFA in Print, Paper, Book from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and has exhibited work in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Outside of their art practice, Hannah enjoys hiking, riding their bike, gardening, and spending time with their cats.
